Pennies, NOT from Heaven
I tend to get a bit wordy in my posts here, which I realize goes against the norms of the day and time in which we live. Except for certain circumstances, everything I put to text will be in sentence form, with at least an attempt to make it grammatically correct, and free of abbreviations. But I want to try to provide some “small ball” pieces to mix it up a bit. You will find posts of this type under the category, 21 Dive, on this site.
To kick this off, I want to make it known that I shop at Dollar General a good bit. Living out in the country, DG provides a good alternative to driving back to town 40 miles round trip, just because you ran out of deodorant. So I am not saying anything about the types of customers that shop there, but I just want to point out something that I have noticed in the parking lots of Dollar General Stores. I’m sure that this goes on everywhere, but the DG parking lot is where I first really started noticing. I think that another reason that I’m picking on DG is that whenever the lines get backed up, it is usually because someone is having an issue with a coupon not giving them the $0.15 off of a product they feel they are entitled to. The phenomenon in which I speak is pennies.
Several years ago, I witnessed an older gentleman by the name of Hoy Stringer bend over to pick up a penny that someone had dropped. Mr. Hoy, as everyone called him, had been elected for several terms before he retired as one of the Marion County (Mississippi) Board of Supervisors. He saw that I was watching and said, “I said that when I got to be 65 years old, I wouldn’t bend over to pick up a penny again. But look at me, here I am.”
So the fascinating thing to me is the number of pennies that I pick up in DG parking lots. It puzzles me that everyone seems to want to save money here and there, but throw 4 or 5 pennies on the ground as if they are a piece of trash.
I tend to fall to Mr. Hoy’s way of thinking. As long as I am physically able to bend over and pick up a penny, I am going to do so. I think I’m going to get a container for the specific purpose of saving the pennies that I find at DG.
What do I do with the pennies? Well, I put almost $100 worth to good use on the very bar in which the majority of my posts are written.
I have a special container for the pennies I pick up. I read an article once about a wealthy man picking a penny up off the ground. Someone asked him why would he do such when he has plenty of money. He replied something like this, It has IN GOD WE TRUST engraved on it and it’s a reminder to always trust in God. If I find the article I will share it with you.
You are doing a great job with your blog!
