Tis The Season

“Tis the season,” that’s what they say! The time of the year to be Jolly, I believe is how it goes. The time to look back and reflect. Time to evaluate, to be thankful, and time to remember all of the good things that came our way over the last three hundred and some odd days.

I’m thinking of the end of the present year and the fact most of us have marked its end as a milestone, completion of a period, one not wished to be remembered. I read a Dominick Dunne novel many years ago, entitled “A Season in Purgatory.” I can’t say today what the novel was about, but the title lends itself well to our current year.

In truth, we know that the turning of the calendar to January 1, 2021, as an act, holds no guarantee that January 2, 2021, and January 3, will bring a different reality than the last days of 2020. Still, we look to that 527040th minute of the year, and speaking for myself, I believe the fireworks will be more spectacular, the kisses will be longer, and the cheers and noisemakers will be louder.

So, tonight, we close the door on 2020. I search the grey matter just beneath the remnants of a once glorious head of hair, hoping to find pertinent words to say. Anything fitting or even thought-provoking that might be applicable to the end of the longest year. After a great deal of thought and effort, I settled on Three. I will leave you with these as I await the last 1 hour and 1 minute of 2020 to pass.

What to say to 2020? (In no certain order)

  • “Well, Bye.” – Powers Booth in his Tombstone portrayal of Curly Bill Brocius
  • “Bye Felicia.” – Ice Cube in his Friday character, Craig Jones
  • “Go on. Get your ass out of here.” – George Strait in his role as Dusty Chandler in Pure Country

Happy New Year!
